Every day in the world news there are articles or stories dealing with acts of crime such as unmotivated homicides, petty theft, or some form of violence. However, one of the most crucial crimes that continue to threaten our global society even in the 21st century is “hate crimes” towards our fellow person. Currently, Uganda is experiencing heavy hate crimes dealing with “gay rights” and gay activist who are protesting for the allowance of gay rights in the country. Mind you that Uganda has a very low tolerance for homosexuals, so low in fact; the country’s Parliament has created a bill (currently waiting to be passed) in place to execute gay people. Hate crimes such as brutal beatings have resulted in fatal severe injuries and death, which is rapidly spreading throughout the country. On January 26, 2011, David Kato, an “outspoken and well-known gay rights advocate” was brutally beaten to death with a hammer. One of the leading causes in this brutal beating stemmed from a newspaper article publishing in the Ugandan Rolling Stone that was published in October 2010 that showed pictures and gave out locations of gay people in the community, especially those people who were pro homosexuality. This tragedy has created much controversy from countries providing aid to Uganda especially dealing with the “anti-homosexual bill” and its inhumane results for human rights. Violence stemming from hatred of a person’s sexual preference is not solely an occurrence seen in Uganda, but all over the world. For example, cases of crime towards homosexuals in the U.S. are still happening even after states passed gay right legislations for the right of homosexuals to marry. Also, hate crimes dealing with religion are occurring in the Middle East, and even hate crimes ranging from a person’s nationality or culture are constantly occurring worldwide.
The mindset to hate someone because of who they are, what they believe in, or their interest is unacceptable as we have seen events in history, for example, Hitler’s hatred for Jews and the mass genocide of the Jewish people in Germany and also slavery in the United States with southern European’s killing Blacks. I believe in order to get pass this childish mentality, as a society we have to open up and accept peoples differences because we are all unique and different as a people. The Uganda Parliament should nullify the bill regarding gay people because it defeats the purpose of human-free will and human rights. If such actions are not taken many more people will die at the hands of ignorance not only in Uganda but globally.
