I am sure everyone has heard of the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. I doubt that you heard that there are six hundred thirty schools and early development centers with over seven thousand students affected by this natural disaster. With that many institutions and lives something needed to be done, and that is what has happened. Unions have formed to help teachers and the six reported schools that need repairs. The city’s schools are closed until further notice but some of the schools in the rural areas may be opened as quickly as Monday. Ministry of Education assessors are grading the schools damage to determine the severity of the damage. They are also working on arrangements for students to cannot go back to school.
This is very tragic occurrence, but also is uplifting in many ways. Even though many have been injured and lost homes and loved ones, there does not seem to be a lot of commotion and chaos. The teachers are joining together to support one another and to bring their school back to place. It seems to me that everyone is being patient and calm during this time; instead of causing riots and more destruction, people are coming together to strengthen and re-establish their lives, to benefit their education system. I admire these teachers for having a positive outlook and supporting on another to all get to their goal as one.
