Former NYPD Detective Andrew McConnell busts subway teens..,2/17/11 Blog#5

In this article of the NYDaily News, it discusses a situation where robbers should be very careful of who they choose to rob. Three teens decided to rob former NYPD detective, Andrew McConnell on a NY subway on this past Tuesday. One of the teens stole McConnell's Ipod out of his hand while he was sitting on the subway and the other two teens took off running with him. McConnell chased them down and showed them his NYPD badge and licensed firearm. One of the teens became afraid once they saw the badge. They dropped the Ipod and pleaded for mercy to not be locked up claiming that he was too young. McConnell showed him no mercy and arrested all three teenagers. 16 year old, Michael Nievez was charged with larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. 17 year old, Jaekas Nunez, and a unknown 14 year old were charged with only grand larceny. McConnell stated that this was his first arrest in six years.

This is a situation makes me almost feel sorry for these teenagers. They thought this would be an easy prank to commit but they chose the wrong person to do it to. I understand how some young boys think that stunts like these are ok to do, not thinking of the consequences that may come with it. For example, the 14 year old realized that he could go to jail and quickly wanted to be able to walk away as if he did nothing. This becomes a issue for society because they are endangering the people around them and are now in jail which affects society's money. It affects our money because we use our tax dollars to pay for prisons. Hopefully things can be done to change crime rates, especially crimes committed by children.

I believe the three teens should be put into jail because if the cop showed them mercy then they would continue to do such acts, so by putting them in jail hopefully they will learn not to rob someone. When some teens are together they try to outrun each other on how "bad" they are and do stupid pranks and they don't even think what the consequences will be. I agree with your statement that it is an issue for society for people around them. Hopefully the teens learn a lesson while in jail.
