After Honduras was removed from a coup for two years it was said that the country was making significant progress in strengthening democratic governance. As Honduras’ new president, Lobo, celebrates his first year in office, some terrible violations of human rights against opposition leaders, activists, and journalist. This shows that Honduras’ government isn’t as stable of a democracy as it was thought. For example, a resistance leader named Juan Chinchilla was abducted at gunpoint by masked men in police and military uniforms. Chinchilla was able to escape during the night after he was burned, beaten, and interrogated. There are thirty six activist and leader murders that we have learned of since Lobo has taken office and at least fifty other people have been killed in political violence. Also, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights reports it received information that the children of anti-coup forces were being kidnapped, attacked and threatened as a strategy to silence the resistance. According to Reporters Without Borders, Honduras was named the most deadly place for reporters because eight reporters were said to be dead during Lobo’s first year in office. After these facts have come out, it shows how little progress Honduras is making within their government.
