In Arizona there was a shooting where Jared Lee Loughner is accused of killing six people in what is called the Tuscon massacre. Loughner suffers from a mental illness which researchers believe is the cause of the killing spree. The article discusses the ties between mental ill and violence. The New York Times asks the question, "Why are the mentally ill still bearing arms?" They also ask how should you help the mentally ill people that are committing crimes? I do agree that treatment should be given to the mentally ill but I do not think they should get away with crimes because of their disability. Statistics from the article state that people who suffer from depression, anxiety or schizophrenia tend to do things to let out their anger. It also says that something was done to the mentally ill before the committed the crime. I understand that when crimes are committed and the person accused is usually assumed of having a mental illness. The article states that society should not just place all the blame on the mentally ill but not to forget the "sane" criminals also. I agree with this statement but I think that more research should be done to help the mentally ill when it comes to crime and every person that commits a crime should have the label of "insanity".
