In the world today so many things are competitive; well I suppose they have always been this way? The race to the moon and many other competitions to see which country can become the most “successful”. Southern Korea is feeling the pressure now in some of their rural schools, with such low attendance, how are they to compete against larger institutions in other countries? Things have not always been this way for these rural area schools. They used to thrive with large attendance but that was back when the country’s agriculture had popular business, which now is forcing farmers into the cities to find work, leaving the rural communities high and dry. An uplifting note is a teacher stated that the government is treating the countryside schools well with technology and resources, which I think is important because just because there are fewer students, it does not give us the right to cheat them out of a quality education.
I personally can understand the frustration of the teachers. Being a youth leader, sometimes I become discouraged with low attendance because, as a teacher, you see how important it is to be educated but yet you can’t physically bring every child there. You are able see the child or teen in a way that no one else can, you see the light in their eyes when they finally grasp the understanding of a problem or situation, that is my reason for teaching, I love to know that I helped impacted a child’s future and helped build a foundation for their learning process. I know that it can be a struggle sometimes to provide for your children especially when you yourself have to do something new, but in the long run we should be trying to provide tomorrow’s future with a better education than the last generation.
