Over the past three days the Syrian government has been using violence against peaceful protestors and arrested several children for taking part in the protests as well. The Syrian government has also gone to such extremes as disconnecting phone lines, interrupting cell phone service, and restricting movement in the town of Daraa. Another human rights violation came from Syrian authorities refusing to persecute the people responsible for disturbing the funeral of a dead protestor. Human Right Watch said that the Syrian government should adhere to the United Nations Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials which means that security forces should use non lethal force until violence is absolutely necessary.
This display of determination to maintain human rights by the Syrian people is one of great struggle that will hopefully pay off in the end. I cannot help but wonder why there is not more outside help other than the Human Rights Watch. In my opinion, I believe that this situation could be one similar to the Civil Rights Movement. By continuing to protest, Civil Rights activist achieved their goal of better equality so why should this work for the civilians in Syria? By continuing to protest these crimes against human rights the Syrians are on the right track to becoming free but I also feel like these people will need outside help from the United Nations or other outside resources. I believe that, by pairing their will with more powerful resources, change for the Syrians will be inevitable.
