UN Rights Chief Condemns Brutal Crackdown on Bahraini Protestors
The Bahraini government came under fire on Thursday for their harsh treatment of Shiite Muslim protestors. The protestors are pro-democracy, seeking also freedom from discrimination in housing and government jobs.
The UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay condemned the Bahraini government's handling of the situation:
"There are reports of arbitrary arrests, killings, beatings of protesters and of medical personnel, and of the takeover of hospitals and medical centers by various security forces. This is shocking and illegal conduct." - From Pillay's statement
The protestor's ultimate goal is to see power move from the Bahraini royals to the country's elected parliament. Such a radical change naturally will prompt a strong reaction from a government in power.
The US is also concerned with the protests, as any imbalance in the small nation could allow it to come under Iranian influence, which the US military does not want, as the Navy's Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain.
