Saleh Suffers String of Major Defections after Protesters Gunned Down in Yemen

Summary: On Monday, March 21, 2011, it became evident that President Ali Abdullah Saleh was losing his grip on power. His top generals, tribal leaders, and diplomats had turned against him. This left the military divided and him barricaded in his presidential palace. What lead to this divide was the killing of more than 50 anti-government protestors on Friday by security forces. Saleh has been President since 1978, and continues to “hold out” as president. Yemen’s defense minister said that the armed forces still support Saleh, a former army officer, and would defend him from any “coup against democracy.” However, it is predicted that the vast majority of the military would soon join the opposition and Saleh would be forced to relinquish power. Killing protesters in cold blood will be the end of Saleh. It was the end of Tunisian president Zine el-Abidine, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Analysis: As bad as it is to say, I have been out of the loop on these past events that have been taking place. There has been much turmoil going on in Egypt, Libya, and now Yemen. Everyone is trying to find a leader that has the people in mind, and not just their own personal benefit. That is exactly what Yemen is trying to do now. The world is going through a state of chaos, and it’s becoming more and more difficult to live peacefully. Although these rebellions and wars may not affect everyone directly, it is affecting most people indirectly. The prices of most things are steadily rising.
