Blog # 11: Ivory Coast: More than 100 bodies found, says UN

The U.N. has reported more than 100 bodies in the past 24 hours in Ivory Coast. Gbago and Ouattara forces face off to try to take power. The U.N. recognizes Ouattara as the elected president, but Gbago refuses to step down. Dead bodies seem to be victims of Liberian mercenaries. Some were burned alive and some were thrown down a well. The violence is evidence of ethnic killing. Loyalty of Liberian mercenaries is questionable. UN officials warn to be cautious to lay blame, for the killing is likely to have come from either side. However, if Gbabgo would step down, it would clear the room for a restorative government and end the killing. President Ouattara requested that the U.N. ease up on sanctions restricting exports. He plans to leave a blockade around Gbago’s residence and wait for him to run out of food and water. Gbago’s advisor commented that Gbago would not surrender due to a question of principle. He believes to have been elected by the people and will stay in power for that reason.

As fighting continues in the Ivory Coast, the issue becomes more vital. Media coverage is strengthening around the Ivory Coast as hundreds continue to die. The U.N. is giving its best efforts to protect human rights but obviously until Gbabgo leaves, the killing will not cease. One can hope once Gbabgo does step down, the Liberian mercenaries leave and peace can be easily restored.
