On April 8th, 2011, three Syrian cities, Daraa, Harasta, and Douma, started barring protesting citizens from receiving medical attention. Due to lack of medical assistance, twenty seven people died in these three cities without any attention from the Syrian government. Human Right Watch reports in the Middle East are pointing out the fact that this denial of medical treatment is not only inhumane but also goes against the government’s obligation to respect and protect human rights. The only action taken by the Syrian government has been more arrests, beatings, and torture of anti-government protesters.
In my opinion, Syria has taken to a whole new level of human rights violations by denying these people their right to receive medical attention. Relating this issue to the previous issue in Egypt, things never escalated to this extreme but the U.N. as well as individual countries went took extensive measures to return rights to the citizens. My question is why isn’t there more being done to resolve the problems in Syria? The United States has begun to use military force in Libya to “fight for human rights” but no such effort has been reported in Syria. Many believe that the US government intervened in Libya was because of the natural resources that Libya has to offer but Syria has the same resources. I believe that our government is refusing to intervene in Syria because of the poor media that will come with it as well as the fear that we could possibly have another pointless war on our hands.
