Blog#11 GENDER EQUALITY AND SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS IN Jamaica

The physical integrity of Jamaican women is not suffiently protected. Violence against women, including domestic violence and sexual abuse, is common, especially in rural areas. There has been a law passed saying that these types of violence are crimes yet the authorities are having a difficult time addressing the problem and the legislation is slow to have any positive impact on women’s lives. How can these women feel any type of safety if they know something can happen to them and nothing much would be done about it? These women must not feel like they are worth anything because they aren’t really protected against. There should be more done about this situation. The women should fight more for their rights and should demand more protection of their laws. Another problem they have in Jamaica for women is financial independence. They have the legal right to hold title deeds but they are limited to access to land and they also have a hard time obtaining mortgages. Since women are more likely to live in poverty, they have more of a hard time trying to obtain access to bank loans. They can receive small sums of money but not large amounts. Society needs to realize that women too have the right to do just as much as men and that they should be treated as so. Women rights should be more looked into more. These women shouldn’t have to deal with this and should be able to live without these types of problems.

I think this is a very unfortunate situation in Jamaica, that is sadly very common around the world. I think its really dumb when people don't like seeing women abused, but do nothing to help them. Its extremely hard to make any difference or develop any programs with societal beliefs holding them at a low level. Since they have minimal significance to society, its doubtful anything huge can be done. It would take a large amount of protesting, and probably another country coming in and offering assistance.

This happens alot in most parts of the world, its unfortunate, but I think women just have to stand up for their rights and support each other in all endeavors and one day things will be better, things have certainly changed of course in some countries though not as rapid as we would all want to see, but I believe change is coming...
