California's Prison Population falls for third straight year, 4/11/11, Blog post #11

Blog post #11 Article posted: (March 17th, 2010) 4: Throughout this semester I have discussed many different acts of crime across the world. I have given my suggestions about each individual situation and even ways I thought could stop or minimize the crime rates. In the article for this week it discusses some encouraging news in California. California’s crime rates have been dropping in the past three years. This, of course, is wonderful news. You may wonder how did they do this and researchers state they do not know what exactly caused it. The article states that California dropped by 0.4%, which is about 1.4 million inmates. This statistics may not be a large number but any type of improvement counts especially if this is the most improvement since 1972. As I have mentioned earlier, there is no known explanation as to how this happened but when I think about it I think of a few possible reasons. I think some of the reasons can be both good and bad. Some people may be being more careful about their decisions or the people who are distress are seeking help. It could be that the prison is letting people off easier or as the article states rewarding inmates who successfully get help in rehab. It also could be the impact of the economy, such as budget-cuts. The article also mentions that California was ordered to decrease the numbers of inmates. I find this statement very interesting. The fact they demanded them to make a change. This is the beginning of good things and I hope this trend continues and crime rates decreases in every state, in every country across the world. http://articles.latimes.com/2010/mar/17/local/la-me-prisons17-2010mar17
