16 people were kidnapped on Friday in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur by armed men identified as former rebel returnees. They had just come from graduation rites in Barangay La Purisima. Most of those kidnapped were teachers, but there were two children aged 10 and 13 in the group, officials said. Reyjoy Brital, the leader spoke to negotiators by cell phone, he threatened “to make a sample” of the hostages if a rescue attempt was launched. He also told the negotiators to send food for the hostages. Police sharpshooters were deployed around the area where the hostages were held and negotiations were under way. Senior Inspector Joel Solon Mendez of the Agusan del Sur provincial police said the six gunmen holding the hostages had initially given a 24-hour deadline to release their hostages. But he said that as of yesterday morning, they appeared to have softened their position on the deadline and demanded that food and water be delivered to them. Kidnapping is a very insufficient way to accomplish your goals; especially if you are holed up someplace that the cops know of and have surrounded. They can blockade you in and cut off your supplies, then you have to bargin your way out and either way you don’t get what you want. Stories like this then appear in the news and tourism takes a hit. No one wants to go to an unsafe country, so really all you are doing is hurting yourself and your neighbors.
