Blog # 1: Halls of Power Narrow For Malaysian Women

The article was telling about how there are not a lot of Malaysian women who are involved in political parties. They also stated in this article how it was difficult for women to receive the type of support they needed to run for an office in the first place because men basically controlled everything. A lot of this comes from a religious standpoint where many men do not think women should hold high positions of power. Women saw that they will have to get past the remarks they will receive from those opposing their decision to do this job. They possible want to keep them pigeon-holed into one particular role to follow what they were accustomed to and the men did not want to see something different. These women stuck with their decision to become a part of the government because no one was going to stop them, this shows how determined they are to accomplish the goals they have set out for themselves.

The information presented in this article is a social problem because it is social in nature since gender is mostly a social construct hence the disparities the women encounter. Women want to be looked at as more than one-dimensional by showing that they are capable of doing the same things men do. Women want to be given the same opportunities as their male counterparts. It affects people everywhere because they are dealing with this very same issue in their own governments. What would need to be done to fix this problem would be to include more women in their governments and if this is done maybe issues that are important to both genders can get addressed and handled correctly.
