Blog 4: More Children to Recieve Vaccines

Every year, over a million children die from severe diarrhea and pneumococcal disease, which are the leading to killers of children worldwide according to the Global Alliance for Vaccine Immunization (GAVI). The GAVI Alliance is providing new funding for vaccines in thirty-seven more developing countries, bringing the number of countries where GAVI provides childhood vaccines to seventy-two. Sixteen countries will receive funding for the rotavirus vaccine, and eighteen more countries will receive funding for the pneumococcal vaccine. Rotavirus is the biggest cause of severe diarrhea in children under age five, and pneumococcal disease causes pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis.

I think that this great in regards to the growth of these countries' medical health maturity. It is sad to see that these countries are just now being introduced to these immunizations for children when the United States has had them for over ten years; however, it is better late than never to have these advancements. For severe diarrhea and pneumococcal disease to be the leading two killers of children worldwide, vaccines for these are nothing less than acceptable. The GAVI Alliance is doing a good job of relieving some of the global stratification in terms of medical advances. The introduction of the vaccines in these developing countries will increase the birth rates and decrease the death rates, increasing the population. There is still a long way to go in order for these countries' medical advances to compare to countries like the United States, but this small step is a good start.
