Recently there has been a lot of conflict in the North African country of Libya. Recently however there have been disturbing events coming to life. In the last few weeks of the Libyan revolution the rebel forces have been pushing into the capitol city of Tripoli. Here is where the totalitarian ruler of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi’s personal compound is located. It is also a recent site for war crimes committed against the people of Libya. These crimes include torture, kidnapping, and murdering unarmed civilians including men, women, children, and medical personnel. These acts are being carried out by forces lead by pro-Gaddafi forces, most notably lead by Gaddafi's own son. These acts are dictated as international crimes according to the war crime acts set back in 1907, and the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials after WWII. These crimes will have long reaching effects throughout the world, due to the fact that history is repeating itself. The possibility that these crimes could escalate into a full out genocide, as a last ditch attempt Gaddafi to maintain power is a horrible thought. So far, there have been five sites discovered containing the bodies of executed civilians. Reporters have recently visited there sites and have discovered bodies with obvious signs of execution and torture. Eye witnesses have also placed Libyan soldiers at the scenes committing these acts. This could have lasting effects on relations with the nation if the international courts decide to prosecute the offenders. We could see new international laws implemented in an effort to prevent these crimes. We might also see an increased presence of forigen aid in Libya to help with the recovery. And the new government might also have to deal with anit-government sentiment.
