There has been a confirmed international spread of the Wild poliovirus type 1, which is genetically linked to a virus in Pakistan, has now reached to China, and has been isolated. Pakistan is also the only location of the Wild Poliovirus type 3, which was a case in Asia, that was on the verge of elimination from the continent; the reported cases have grown from 48 in 2010 to 84 in 2011. Supplementary Immunization Activities in Pakistan have lacking in high risk areas, and the Khyber agency regularly missed 200,000 children during the SIA's in the past two years, in addition the Khyber and FATA have significant operational challenges that continue to bring down the quality of the SIA's in accessible areas specifically in the provinces of Balochistan and Sindh. The world trade organization (WHO) rates this virus as a high risk, for the further international spread of the WPV, particularly because the expected large scale population movements associated with the upcoming pilgrimage to Mecca, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Pakistani government has launched a national polio emergency action plan, but the plan is not being seen at a critical implementation level.Sub-national immunization days were planned for 19-21 of September, followed by more activities in 54 districts in the country.
In order for this virus to be maintained, and be avoided in the future, work from several different countries needs to be in affect. Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean need to strengthen the disease surveillance, in order to rapidly detect any poliovirus importations and facilitate a rapid response, and boost the immunization coverage routine to fight all strains of the polio virus, before this becomes a even greater epidemic. People will be traveling and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has issued vaccination requirements for travelers of all ages, and are required to show proof, I think the whole world should get on board with this idea, so that we can all remain safe and disease free, while also helping make sure others are too.
