On September 8th the Mexican navy raided known drug cartel locations in the Mexican city of Veracruz. These raids resulted in the discovery of a telecommunication network in the city. This system was used as an early warning system by the cartel “los zetas’. This shows how well equipped the cartels are and how they are able to evade arrest for so long. This is a major problem in both México and America, because the cartels are committing various crimes in both countries. It is a growing social problem seeing as how there has been a major death toll in recent years. In the past 5 years of Felipe Calderon’s presidency, nearly 40,000 deaths have been linked to cartel related crimes. This death toll is constantly rising, and the cartel violence has been escalating in recent months. There have been increased raids commenced like the one on the 8th, by carious Mexican agencies. These arrests however are only a small part of what consist of the cartel. Only 80 cartel members we detained in the whole operation, which lasted 26 days. The cartels leaders are some of the most wanted men, they warrant a 30 million dollar reward each. These men are all wanted for multiple crimes, and are held responsible for each crime committed. Meaning some of these men have warrant for well over a couple hundred crimes each. This is a major problem, because these men have great influence locally and nationally in Mexico. These men also control a vast amount of wealth, and use this wealth in many different ways. Most of which is used to expand their criminal empires and perpetuate violence. This is really bad for Mexico since it puts certain areas into a state of gang warfare. It’s also bad for America since there is a constant stream of drugs, as well as violence into the country.
