Blog 6: Church Rebuilds After 2008 Election Night Arson

In 2008 a church was burned to ashes right after the election of the United State’s first African American President in Springfield, MA. Hours after the election three white men came to a predominately black church that was being build and burned it down. This was considered a hate crime and an act of racism. Now three years later a new 20 square foot church is now built right on top of the same place it was burnt down. The burning of this church reached national news. A couple of months after the fire 3 white males in their twenties were arrested and charged for this hate crime. Two of those men pleaded guilty and the other was convicted after the trial.
This is definitely a social problem. This hate crime reached national news, which means that people across the world were able to see what took place in this one town in the US. Racism has been a social problem in the world for centuries. When acts of racism take place it could lead to many violent acts, which means people are harmed and even killed sometimes. In today’s world racism is not as big as it once was but still plays a major part in the way our society is. This crime affected many people not only in that town in community but across the world. This one hate crime could have led to many other outbreaks in our country. It is a shame that people still live in the past and cannot see the world for what it is today, which is a much bigger picture.
