The bus business is one of the main ways people travel in New York City. In 2004 a cock tail waitress lost her life while waiting for the bus after work on a late night in Chinatown. She took a bullet in the head. She had no information on her and they could not identify her. Witnesses did not come forward, which made it hard to solve the case. Today the police and detectives have came to the conclusion that the crimes that take place on these buses are all causes of organized crime. The Chinatown buses have been around for decades and are a necessity for poor Asians to travel back and forth to work. On these buses all types of crime take place, such as stabbing and shooting. Detectives try to investigate and interview witnesses but they always end up where they started and get no new information. To this day the police still investigate the murder of the cocktail waitress because they believe it can help them with a lot of the other crimes that are taking place on these buses today.
This is a social problem because these types of crimes are organized, which means a lot of people are at risk of being in danger. Since the bus business is a major part of Chinatown and how people get to work they have to use the system in order to make a living. When crime is happening at a high rate on these buses people don’t want to ride them. For some people if they don’t ride the bus they wont get to work just because they may work in cities far away. So these crimes can also lead to job loss and instability in the home and even bigger social problem.
