Mexico arrests suspected Zetas leader Oliva Castillo

Today, the “third highest-ranking figure in the powerful Zetas drug cartel”, Carlos Oliva Castillo, was arrested for having a connection with a deadly arson attack on Casino Royale in Monterry, Mexico in the month of August. This attack was responsible for the deaths of 52 people; one of the deadliest attacks Mexico has seen in years. (Throughout the article, he is referred to as Oliva Castillo, so that is what I will refer to him as in my summary.) It is also believed that the arrest of Oliva Castillo is reasoning for brawls on the same day of the arrest between rival gangs, totaling 60 prisoners, at a nearby jail in Monterrey. These prisoners burned mattresses and attacked each other with “makeshift knives”. This brawl left seven inmates dead; four being burned to death and the remaining three from stab wounds.

Oliva Castillo, a woman (assumed o be Oliva’s girlfriend) and another man were arrested in a “safe house” located in Saltillo, in northern Mexico. Col Ricardo Trevilla, a spokesman for a Defense Department, commented that there were “several pieces of evidence” that led authorities to believe that Oliva Castillo ordered someone, Francisco Medina Mejia, to execute the arson attack on Casino Royale. It was Col Trevilla who noted Oliva Castillo as the third ranking in importance of the Zetas drug cartel. He is rumored to have led the Zetas gang “in the northern Gulf coast of Tamaulipas, as well as in the northern states of Coahuila, where Saltillo is located, and Nevou Leon, where Monterrey lies.”

I’m sure the citizens of Mexico are happy to hear he has been arrested. This is a step in the right direction towards protecting the country from these notorious criminals. It is unfortunate when people lose their lives, especially when they’re innocent bystanders having nothing to do with the “purpose” of the crime. I hope that the arrest of Oliva Castillo strikes a nerve in the other members of the Zetas gang and other gangs that no one gets away with anything.
