Blog 8: Sex Charges Dropped After Victim Recants Identification

Since March of this year women have been getting sexually assaulted in a New York City subway near Bay Ridge Sunset Park. There were two men arrested for these crimes. The sexual assault consisted of groping, men performing masturbation in front of them, and rape. The most recent women that reported sexual assault was asked to pick out her attacker in a line up. She picked her attacker and he was then placed in other lineups for other victims to choose from. None of the other 20 women that were assaulted picked this same man, so no charges for sexual assault could actually be placed upon him. When the police first approached the victims identified attacker they found him peeping into windows of parked cars. They also found marijuana and pornographic videos playing on his phone. The things that he was doing when they found him raised the suspicion of him committing these crimes even more. Even though he was not charged with sexual assault he still faces charges of possession of marijuana.

This crime or these crimes of sexual assault are big social problems in our society. They are social problems because they cause harm to individuals. Since these two men were not convicted or actually charged with sexual assault these women could be discourage from reporting these type of things if they were to happen again. By them doing that it will cause an even bigger social problem because the people of the community will not be able to become aware of the type of people and the dangers that awaits them when traveling on these subways. If they are not aware they cannot prepare themselves for the unexpected.
