‘Girls Given Equal Rights to British Throne under Law Changes’

As of today, changes are being made to the United Kingdom’s succession laws so that sons and daughters will have equal rights to the throne. This now means that a first-born daughter will have precedence to the throne over a younger brother. According to British Prime Minister David Cameron, plans are also being made to do away with the 1701 Act of Settlement that prevents a UK monarch from marrying a Catholic. In addiction, the article points out that Britain is not the first European country to take steps toward gender-neutral succession laws. Denmark, Sweden, and Norway took action years ago and now the UK, with a newly married couple, are following suit.

If Prince William and Catherine, the duchess of Cambridge, were to have children, theirs would be the first to have these laws applied to. Say they were to have a daughter; she would be the future queen. I would agree that this is “something of an historic moment.” People are finally waking up and realizing that these ideas that women are less than men have changed. Old rules that keep us within these boxed ideologies must change too.

Wow! I'm so shocked that a law like this would pass, and I'm so happy! It's great that a first-born daughter will have precedence to the throne over the first-born son. This is a great step towards gender equality.
