Many questions still remain unanswered about the deadly shooting at a Southern California hair salon that left eight people dead. CNN affiliates reported that a custody battle may have been the motive. “We are a close-knit community and have never experienced a devastating incident such as this," said the mayor. A police sergeant also stated that officers responded to shoots fired at the salon and found six people dead inside the business. Three other people were taken to the hospital and two of them died due to their injuries. The suspect, Scott Evans Dekraai, was arrested as he was trying to leave the scene. According to police he faces multiple counts of murder. Authorities have not revealed a motive for the shootings but a CNN affiliate reported that Dekraai’s ex-wife was a stylist at the salon and they were in a custody battle over their son. In court papers Fournier claimed that Dekraai was mentally unstable, had threatened to kill himself or someone else, and "was almost manic when it comes to demanding absolute right to control our son," said KTLA.
The stress that comes with a custody battle can become very overwhelming. People seem to do crazy things when it comes to their children. In any situation involving custody everyone should be looking out for the best interest of the children, they are the main concern and not the parents. This is not the first time something extremely bad happened over a custody battle, so there should be more done to protect the people involved. Dekraai killed his ex-wife and seven other people because of it and no one wins in that situation. He is going to prison, the child’s mother is dead and the child is more than likely is going to have to be put into foster care and on top of that he is going to have to deal with the fact that his father killed his mother.
