This week the Mexican navy discovered 32 more bodies in the suburbs of Veracruz. The discovery of these bodies comes after 35 bodies were seen being dumped under an overpass only miles away. This violence is the continued escalation between two of México’s largest drug Cartels the Zetas and the Gulf Cartel. The two have been fighting over control over key drug routes on the east coast of México, especially over the port city of Veracruz. Many of the victims in recent killings have been tied to at least one of the criminal organizations in the area. These killings are meant to weaken a rival’s power base within a certain area, and to capture key distribution, and shipping locations. In the past four years, and estimated 40,000 people have been killed in gang related violence in México, and the numbers are still growing.

The problems in Mexico have been escalating for years, and it has started affecting their international relations. Countries like the United States have even put out warnings informing people about the hazards of visiting México. This has caused a decline in tourism, and has affected business on both sides of the border. Also once popular locations for vacation are seeing sharp declines in tourism, due to crime. Places like Cancun have recently seen its own crime waves, due to its proximity to the ocean, and drug market to foreigners. This growing threat of violence has also caused a surge of immigration from border towns. Trafficking of drugs into the United States has also caused many problems, such as murder, and drug dealing.
