Sunday Turkish pensioners and their families came to Germany by the dozens to commemorate their trip 50 years before in response to Germany’s need for workers. Although it was not their intention to stay for good, many did so, which started what today is a large population of 3 million Turkish people living in Germany. In celebration of the 50th anniversary, there were film festivals and exhibits in a way to thank the migrant workers for what they have done. Chancellor Angela Merkel stated in a message to the Turkish migrants that they should learn “good German” and also said that there was still much work to be done to integrate them into German society. Immigration has long since been an issue in Germany, with 10 million immigrants it is the third largest migrant population in the world next to Russia and the United States. However some individuals with Turkish ancestry are now moving back to Turkey since their economy is growing quickly and there are more jobs and opportunities to be had there.
It can be seen here that immigration is very much a global issue and the opposition that the German population has felt and is still feeling towards the Turkish people is a common sentiment around the world towards an immigrant population in a country. It is apparent that there is still work to be done in Germany to create a more integrated Turkish population. However one of the challenges could be how this can be accomplished without the Turkish people feeling that they are obligated to leave behind their roots to fully become part of the German culture and to be accepted as well.

When a country needs more workers it is very common on them to call upon citizens in neighboring countries to come and work. While making these agreements they are basically integrating their societies with different cultures as well as different backgrounds. This as a whole affects people and they way they interact with each other. Socially this will help other people get used to different cultures and working with different people because in the way our society is going today, we will have to have workers come and work in the U.S. to stay up with such competitive markets.
