Blog 11- Global Inequality

11/12/2011

The majority of people in our society wake up, take a shower, go to work or school, come home and just relax without having to think about whether or not they will be harassed by the police because of their sexual preference or any other discriminatory factor they were born with. Inequality and social prejudice is something many people in our society face because they either choose not to be part of what is considered the norm in our society or because they were simply not born into the majority.

In this article presented by Global News, homosexuals in Nepal are currently battling for their rights as their new constitution will soon take effect. This revolution deemed “Nepal: Red turn to Pink” will make Nepal the pioneers in Asia with making sexual minorities rights valid. This all began when Nepal's first openly gay member of parliament, Babu Pant, began lobbying for gay rights in areas that definitely needed fixing. He started with a small grass roots organization known as Blue Diamond Society and began making a difference in the lives of many people. Soon his message caught on and he was asked to stand for election himself.

This article is talking about a new era; when citizens of certain societies are changing things not by going to war or hurting others, but by having peaceful protests and demanding that their voices be heard. Time and time again it has proven to be more effective at gaining ones right than when violent actions are taken.

I agree that global inequality is a major social issue. We should raise more awareness to the situation maybe just maybe it'll change the world for the better.
