Blog #11 Tennessee woman indicted in deaths of infant twins

Officials said that prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against a Tennessee woman accused of smothering her newborn infants. A Sumner County grand jury indicted Lindsey Brooke Lowe on two counts each of first-degree felony murder, first-degree premeditated murder and aggravated child abuse. “We reserve the death penalty for the worst of the worst," stated District Attorney Ray Whitley. The mother has no criminal record and the crimes met only one of 16 aggravating factors that would support a death penalty case. Lowe secretly gave birth to twin boys in a bathroom in the Hendersonville home she shares with her parents, and then smothered the infants and hid their bodies in a bedroom laundry basket, police said. Lowe confessed, telling police she didn't look at either of the babies as she "placed her hand" over each child's mouth to stop them from crying. Lowe will be formally arraigned November 18 and if convicted, she would face potential consecutive life sentences on the murder charges, Whitley said.
A lot of women around the world chose to hide their pregnancies from their friends and family for multiple reasons. Most of those women also do not receive any type of prenatal care, which is a very bad idea. Not only is it bad for the baby or babies but it is also bad for the mother’s health. When it is time to have the babies the mother sometimes has a home delivery with no type of medical help what so ever. No one knows why she suffocated her twins but no excuse is going to justify her taking their lives. Receiving the death penalty would have been giving her the easy way out. She should get life in prison so she can think about what she did for the rest of her life.

I completely agree with you. I don't think there is any circumstance in which the death penalty is admissible. Who are we to play God? And being that our justice system has many flaws, I don't think taking someone's life even with the slight chance that they are guilty is right...even in this case where the woman admitted to the crime.

I personally am STRONGLY AGAINST the death penalty and for some reason the whole idea of it doesnt seem right with me, yes she was very wrong for what she did as are a lot of people who have killed their children as well, but I just dont think we should kill another because she murdered someone else, i mean too wrongs dont make a right and how do we teach our youth that killing is wrong if the government is continuing to do it?

I think Lindsey should be sentenced for life but I do not agree that the death penalty should be an option. I agree that people hide their pregnancies from their loved ones but there is counseling and option as adoption to decrease the anxiety. I think the fact that she decided to hide the bodies of the babies makes me say she should be sentenced for life. This is sad but in reality child abuse is real and there needs to be more efforts to decrease these actions.

I am on the fence about the death penalty. I feel that yes, it is wrong to take a life for a life, but at the same time people in prison can still make a new life for themselves behind bars. They can receive diplomas and degrees, watch TV, and do all kinds of other things while someone else cannot enjoy life. However, I feel the death penalty should only be put in place if there is no 'what-if' or 'maybes' in the evidence that proves them guilty. even then, I believe the most extreme cases should be seen the death penalty. I just can't say I'm totally against it because I know if someone were to harm or kill someone I love I cannot say I how I would react to their freedom.

I am against the death penalty. I don't feel that is our duty as people to decide who lives or dies even if they a have committed a terrible crime. I think that this woman should be forced to live out her life in prison. That would be a better punishment with death because she would have to live with what she did every day for the rest of her life.
