Blog #12- Chinese Treat Workers Like Slaves

Workers from Zimbabwe have accused their Chinese employer, Sagecoa Zimbabwe Company Limited, of treating them like slaves, physically abusing them and only paying them $4 a day. The company originally hired 200 employees, but now has only 45 left after most have left over the mistreatment. The Chinese firm beats their employees for no apparent reason, pays them below minimum wage, and threatens them because they have the government backing them up. Workers feel like they are slaves in their own country at the hands of the new globalization in their country. The government is watching while they are being mistreated, but only care about the additional money they can make. Workers in the country are often forced to work in unsafe and hazardous conditions, and do not receive the compensation they are owed.

The mistreatment of workers around the world is a very growing and troubling problem. People are being taken advantage of by their superiors in order to further their own wealth and the profits of the company. They have no regard for the safety and well-being of their employees just making more money. The very people that are responsible for the success and development of the company are at the lowest possible positions and are put down and abused. In addition, this story brings to light the relationship between the corportate world and government's and political parties. Governments are sitting back and watching their own citizens be taken advantage of for the purpose of receiving more money from corporations to enhance their own profits and success.

After reading just the title of your current event, I could easily say that I was expecting this to happen. After watching the Vanguard series on the factories in China, it is sad to see the conditions these workers survive in without, in many cases, getting paid anything at all.

This is typical in China. As we watched in class we saw some of the same mistreatment to many of those people who were paid very little to nothing and sometimes not even paid at all. They worked for very long hours while not getting any breaks, and if caught sleeping they were subject to being fired or even worse. These conditions are beyond cruel.

As I read this, I felt that it was really ironic that Chinese businesses are the ones who are now taking advantage of other workers. The fact that a lot of their workers have already experience maltreatment and harsh work conditions, you would think they would have compassion to not do that to others. But I see that people really dont want to help others. But like Carmen stated in her comment when we watched the videos in class about work conditions in China, they were treating their own people wrong. I wonder how they expect others to respect them as workers when they dont respect other people.

No Chinese worker should be mistreated but it happens all the time. Their wages get lowered so they have less money to live with while working more hours and in some cases being hit or abused to work harder. Non of this should be allowed to happen in a work area.

It is sad that the workers are being treated this way in their own country. The government is supposed to be there to support their people and keep them save not let them be mistreated and worked as slaves.

I agree this is pretty typical in China but it doesn't mean that it is ok. This is cruel and something should be done

This sadly shows how there is no regulation that the Chinese have to follow and no accountibility for their actions. There needs to be new laws put into action that force these companies into following rules so that this inexcusable behavior and practices stop.
