Blog 12: On Campus, a Law Enforcement System to Itself

In this article it is discussed about how the law enforcement on different college campuses are not doing too much when it comes to sexual crimes made by athletes at school. At some schools where sports are major the athletes get away with almost a slap on the wrist when the consequences should be a lot worse. In December of 2006 a student was found dead and, naked from the waist down with a pillow over her head. All the university police had to say was there was no reason to suspect foul play. They went two months without saying anything but the student who was finally convicted had been caught before climbing in a window of another building. The university police have the choice to report the incidents to the district attorney or to just let the administrators of the school handle the situation. The Penn state case that is taking place had been reported to the district attorney but he declined to prosecute. Some schools have even been sued because the sexual abuse situations were not handled the proper way. When these athletes commit these crimes instead of being expelled from school the coaches usually find some kind of way to get them out of it. They only end up with a brief suspension or probation. The coach will even go as far as meet with the athlete before the police do just to get a story together.

This becomes a problem to society because while these students who have been assaulted are trying to find a way to deal with life, or some families of victims who didn’t live are trying to coop, these athletes or whoever is out free feeling just fine. Students begin to feel unsafe and will not continue their education or even commit suicide.

Wow! This is a really interesting article. I have always held the stereotype towards school athletes that they get everything they want, and that they get away with everything. I know that this is something that I need to get away from and get to know everyone for themselves, but when I look at articles like these I feel different. The fact that they are overlooked for whatever they have done is wrong, especially when you are talking about a crime. A person's life is more important than winning a game or being all conference. This world is so confused.

This is such a terrible thing! This article is very interesting because honestly this sounds like something that would happen in a movie but it is going on in real life. You should not get special treatment just because you are an athlete especially when a woman is found half naked dead and a pillow over her face!

Student athlete or not people should be handled the same way when it comes to breaking the law. This is a social issue that probably does take place on other campuses. I was surprised to hear that other state police or other authority was not involved in the case in 2006. Students should feel safe especially in a living environment like a University.
