Blog Post #12 Commercial Colleges Break Rules in U.S. Inquiry

Investigators, posed as students tried to enroll in 15 commercial colleges using fake diplomas and were accepted by 12. Investigators did this to test the college’s academic practices. While enrolled, they turned in incorrect assignments, unrelated work to the topic, plagiarized work, and at times did not log in to class to see how the colleges would react. In one case the investigator was given an A for an assignment he never submitted. Many of the colleges gave them full credit for the work submitted and this had lead to questioning on the quality of education one can get from a commercial college that promises a good education. The 5 major commercial colleges were involved in this investigation, though they were not named.

Everyday people are brainwashed by commercials from these colleges making them believe that they can receive a quality education from them. Persuading them that they can earn a quality education that will lead to a better job, all while spending less time and money than you would at a university. This effects people worldwide in many countries. Many people end up buying their sales pitch only to end up with a useless degree, having learned nothing and more financial issues. The importance of education and how beneficial furthering your education is stressed often in today’s society, but yet and still commercial colleges like the ones found in this investigation still continue to operate. If education is so important why would useless education like this even be an option?

This blog was really an eye-opener for me. Having thought about attending one of these commercial colleges after having my daughter, I am quite pleased that I didn't. Online classes and universities shouldn't be looked down upon because of a few school that aren't doing what they need to...though these statistics are astounding. Great Blog!

Wow! this was very interesting to hear about when it comes to being accepted into an educational system. I wonder how Universities do not take things like background checks and educational checks seriously. With this happening so often just in this study, I wonder how often this actually happens in the educational environment.

This was some new information for me. I was surprised and shocked at it. This is not something you hear about often when being accepted into the educational system.

This was really eye opening for me. It really shocked me I know some of the commericals I see I usually dont believe but I thought if it works for them so be it, but not for me. To see this really upsets me because some people really do want to learn and to get a quality education and that is being taken away from them

That amazes me that commercial colleges can get away with something like that after accepting money from the students. The commercials on TV make them seem as good or better as a traditional college or university, and clearly it is not.

This is a very interesting article. My aunt received a masters degree at Phoenix and it isn't really working for her. I really hate it for those commercial colleges that are really doing things right. Educational inequality happens in so many ways, so those who do not have much money and go to those commericals colleges are being cheated.

This was a great investigation. I think the colleges should be reviled for the people that actually take courses. I have always seen these commercials but never thought one could get away with good grades doing minimal work.

This definitely goes to show how the U.S. needs to really take a closer look into how strict the instructors of these courses are and how these investigators got by without doing any realy work. It is something that brings to the surface many issues surrouding online colleges as well as possible solutions to this issue.

This is very interesting! Educational administrators should look deeper into things like this. This can make it harder for us who are doing the right thing, or at least trying to!

I was suprised to see that the investigators even got into the school. I thought all schools did in depth background checks to find out if you really completed high school. I wonder if they just took the money and let them in. I think it's sad that the guy got and A for not even turning in an assignment. Some people go to these schools who really want to get an education and if they are not being graded properly they may believe they are doing the right things when they aren't. Giving proper grades helps us realize what we did wrong and how to make ourselves better with our next assignments.
