Murder, rape, and domestic violence are some of many crimes that women in Turkey are experiencing everyday. In the past seven months 226 women were murdered 478 were raped and 722 were hospitalized due to domestic violence. On November 25 Turkey decided to take some form of action by ratifying the COE the Council of Europe to prevent violence against women. Many groups who were already fighting to end women’s violence took on many forms of celebration. Imams in Mosques decided instead of praying they gave speeches denouncing violence against women and called for respect for all women. They also, gave a sermon calling all women the source of existence for humanity. Other groups marched for the cause and there was also a group formed by men that aimed to stand behind this new reform. Although Turkey is not where it needs to be the COE is aiming to make it a nationwide policy that will hopefully lower the numbers of domestic violence by the year 2020. They believe every ministry should be involved and every prime minister should enforce these rules.
I feel that it was important for the parliament of Turkey to establish some kind of shield against all of the violence that women are enduring. There is no reason why there should be so much crime and hatred being targeted against women. There should have been laws implemented to solve this problem long before things elevated to the level that they have gotten too. Women should not be confined to the norms of old traditional beliefs. They should not feel subjected to only serving as a wife and mother. Any woman should be given the choice of freedom, education, and the will to establish their own way of living.

478 raped, 226 murdered, and 722 women hospitalized due to domestic violence?! These statistics seem unbelievable! This is very saddening that women in Turkey have to go through this. Domestic violence continues to get worse every time I read or hear about it. Why should women have to go through this? I see why women would rather commit suicide then face this horrible treatment everyday of their lives. I am glad however that something is being done, even though I am not sure a policy will stop husbands from beating and murdering their wives. However, it is a start.
Its a sad truth that woman are targeted for many different crimes, and educating people is the best way to put an end to such crimes.
In my HDF class we learned that Turkey is very patriarchal and they have hierarchies based on gender and age. Most women are not educated because their parents don't really focus on their education because their daughter would be marrying into another family (bride price) and it will be pointless. Women are not really appreciated in Turkey they are sort of a "burden". Many also do not work because it will bring shame to their husband and I think due to this reason their husband's believe they have control over their wives and do with them as they please. They are trying to go to traditional to egalitarian but they have a long way to go.
I am so glad they are going to do something about the violence! There is no reason why all these women should be raped, murdered, or beaten. the men who commit these crimes need to do some serious jail time and then maybe that will open their eyes to what they are doing!
This is a sad but true article. Women are in mostly every crime. Being proactive is the only way to put and end to crimes
This article most definitely stood out to me! I'm so glad that Turkey has decided to stand up and end the violence against women. We are strong, determined, and precious individual and should be treated as such!
It is about time Turkey is doing something about the horrible crimes and it's only taken 478 raped, 226 murdered and 722 hospitalized due to domestic violence. Something should have been done years ago to prevent these crimes but it is good that women are finally getting the rights they deserve.
Wow I did not realize the saverity of domestic violence until I read all of these outstanding facts. This problem needs to be solved immediatly because this type of violence goes aganst everything humans should stand for. No one should have to experience this torture. We need to do somethng other than just make policys but we need to start some where i guess
This is so unbelievable. We are in the 21st century and women are susceptible to so many of the things that they have been for years. It really saddens me that women are put last. Turkey officials should be ashame of their leadership, why has it took so long for them to enact laws against such violence.
Domestic violence is a horrible thing. Reading articles like this open my eyes and force me to be more appreciative of the rights I have as a woman.
