According to the article, from the years 2003-2008 the
abortion rate had changed slightly to being less than 30 per 1,000 women. This
is a different story for the proportion of unsafe abortions that rose
significantly from 1995 to 2008 at 49 percent. It is shown that the unwanted pregnancies
are coming from improper use of contraceptives; this rate is increasing
alongside with the unsafe abortions. Policies are being made to ensure that
women are protected from this, but it is known that family planning programs
aren’t enough to keep the rates down. This coincides with the constant
population increase and families choosing to have smaller families.
First, let us define the term “unsafe abortion”, the World
Health Organization (WHO) considers it “a procedure for termination pregnancy
and is performed by a person who is lacking the necessary skills or in an
environment that doesn’t meet minimal medical standards”. I am pro-choice, I
believe that it is every woman’s right to decide what she wants to do with her
body, but I feel that a woman should also be more responsible in her decisions.
I understand that there are times when women are raped or a pregnancy has a
negative effect on the body. But I don’t, however, feel that just because the
woman didn’t want to get pregnant or she is considered “too young” by societal
norms that she should get an abortion EVERY time her mistake catches up with
her. The article fails to take this into consideration, I did like, however, and
that the article mentioned that the reason most women are receiving these
unsafe abortions are because they cannot afford the proper procedure and
certain countries have limited resources or abortions are banned altogether so people
are finding places to get them elsewhere.
