Blog 3 Global Health Workforce - Pathways to Health 2/3/12

This article is about the very recent Irish Forum for Global Health's two day conference in Dublin. They focused on the Global Health Workforce Crisis "recognizing that one of the greatest challenges facing global health today is the critical shortage of skilled health personnel, especially in remote areas of the world." One billion people in the world do not have access to healthcare services. Millions of lives are lost each year due to inadequate access to skilled, motivated and supported health workers, with one billion people in 57 countries facing a daily struggle to access basic healthcare due to health workforce shortages and uneven distribution of health workers within countries. This is a major issue seeing as "Sub-Saharan Africa bears 25% of the global burden of disease but has only 3% of the world‘s health workers". One proposed solution to the issue of access to healthcare services is implementing more cost effective technology, this should improve the working conditions and allow access to training materials.  I think this is a huge issue. It makes me wonder why/how did we get to this point? Less people are going into the healthcare field and are willing to be working in these areas under the conditions. Of course the conditions need to be improved in order to bring more professionals in but it is a seemingly daunting task with the way the media depicts developing countries and places that are truly in need of help. I truly feel for this issue and I personally plan to join the Peace Corps or another relief effort organization and I feel that this is my calling and duty. I wish there were more people who would be willing to sacrifice their comfort to actually GO to these needy countries rather than just donating money.
