Cybercrime is a major global issue that seems to continue getting worse. An important and helpful global current event that is taking place is the new INTERPOL Cybercrime Center that is being built and will open in 2014. The article, “Inside INTERPOL’S New Cybercrime Innovation Center,” written by Neal Ungerleider was released today and discusses what this cybercrime center will consist of and how it will benefit the world. The center is located in Singapore, Asia. This cybercrime center will allow law enforcement to learn all about the latest cybercrimes that have been taking place. Not only will this center give law enforcers information on cybercrime, but there will also be laboratories, conference space, and museum-like spaces for tours that will inform the public on cybercrime. INTERPOL doesn’t get most of their information from local police departments, but instead they gather most of their information from cyber-security firms. The following quote shows what the main goal is for this center and how this will play a key role in eliminating cybercrime; “Building a large-scale cybercrime research center isn’t just smart policing; it’s a necessity for police who want to catch the crooks.”
This global current event is very significant. The reason for this is because cybercrime is a major global issue that seems to keep elevating; this center will help the world eliminate this crime. From a sociologist perspective, this center is a way to reach out to the public and inform them on this crime and can also offer ideas on how the public can prevent themselves from being a victim of cybercrime. It is very important that something is done all around the world to fight against cybercrime. It is going to take every country to step on board to eliminate cybercrime. INTERPOL’S cybercrime center is a great step at fighting against cybercrime all around the world.
