Blog #4: Northern Ireland sex industry 'fastest growing in UK'

An organization based out of Northern Ireland is saying they have the fastest growing sex industry in any part of the UK.  26 potential victims have been identifies in Northern Ireland since Aril 2011, and victims have been traced to countries Ghana, China, Zimbabwe, and Slovakia.  Most recently, a week ago, a man was convicted for trafficking and four other cases are going on at this current time.  Police statistics from the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities have stated that they are aware of the fact that they have the fastest growing sex industry in the UK at the moment.  Government officials are making strides to buckle down on the issue and say they are doing all they can to tackle the “wicked crime”.  They also believe the new offences help classify human trafficking as a global problem.
Human trafficking is a huge issue and a complete violation of ones’ rights, often referred to as “modern day slavery”.  In the article, one reporter Jennifer McCann said “we need to put these people away, we need to give them long prison sentences and we need to make sure that a strong message is sent out that it is totally unacceptable”.  I’m glad they are increasing on their efforts to lessen the issue as it is increasing, because this is a human rights violation.  In the book, it addresses gender equality and how women are considered lesser than man even with the many changes made throughout history.
The book also says women are at risk for trafficking, exploitation, and sexual violence, in conflict zones especially and these acts are fueled by society as a part of global patterns.  Many women fall victim of rape for profit as a result of gender inequality and lack of human rights around the world.
