Blog #4: Strengthen family to avert social collapse

Canada’s fertility rate is on the rise.  A sustainable birth rate and a successful economy are both dependent largely upon the stability of marriages.  In Canada, and other societies, a healthy society consists of a fertility rate being 2.1 in order to support the elders in the society.  There are currently too many elders and not enough people in the younger generation to support the elders.  Childbearing to married couples is a way for society and the economy to flourish.  Canada and other countries are asking for increased education to promote marriage and to lessen the stigma of marriage and divorce.  The media plays a tremendous role in reversing the positive outlook on marriage.  The media portrays marriage and family centered life as a thing of the past.  Europe, the Americas, Israel, and the Middle East have all found a correlation between the adherence to religious beliefs and stable families.  As a result of holding these religious beliefs family centered lifestyle is to be more valued.
There are two main reasons that the birth rate is a problem.  There are not enough people being born to families, and the life expectancy has increased over the years.  This is becoming an increasingly global problem in many areas of the world.  Japan for instance with the birth laws being only one child, will have a large population over sixty-five and not enough younger people to take care of the older generation.  I believe that if programs were put in place to help promote marriage and family lifestyle that more people might enter into these relationships and decide to rear children.  The patriarchal society is a thing of the past, but if we were to bring it back, could it help with our situation.  If the male was the head of the household, then there would be a sense of a traditional family with stability, leading to a flourishing economy and also a more stable birth rate.  While the global population is vast, and eventually resources will run out, because of the low birth rates and high life expectancies, we must find a solution to this problem.  We cannot have the older generations being neglected, but we also need to be mindful of overpopulation.
