Blog 5: 2012: Year of War Against Cyber Crime

There is a major global current event going on right now, and that is a war against cyber crime. The article, “2012: Year of War Against Crime,” by Arthur Coviello discusses how the world has an abundance of digital technology, which has resulted in cyber crime. “Attackers are taking advantage of gaps in security created by complex and disparate technology...” found on page one, which shows that something has to be done to close these “gaps.” These gaps have become known in the year 2011 but Coviello says that 2012 is going to be a year of action to improve and innovate. The following quote shows how this war against cyber crime is taking place all around the world: “Across the globe, governments are prioritizing cyber security as both a national security and economic security issue.” In order to do this, there will have to be a common framework to share information dynamically and at line speed for both private and public sectors. This in turn is going to increase the spending amounted for cyber security. By 2015, the US federal government forecasts spending $13.3 billion on cyber security. The article ends with this statement: “Our society has made unimaginable progress over two decades through advances in infotech. It’s our responsibility to sustain this advancement through a trusted digital world.”
This global current event on crime is very significant because it is very important that society is aware of this commonly occurring crime and that something is done all around the world to create a safe common framework. Since it is known that there are gaps in security, its time to take action as a whole, meaning everyone around the world and make this a year of war against crime to end this crime. Cyber crime has been on the rise in the past few years and it is important that something is done to eliminate it. The war against cyber crime will bring awareness to the public, which is extremely important and in turn will bring a better chance to end cyber crime. This current event is occurring in every country and it is a must that the entire globe takes action in this war against crime.
