Blog #5: Universities must pay students who do internships

We are college students; we are working towards the next step, getting that full-time job after we graduate. It’s definitely a road to get there, 4 years, part-time job and maybe an internship, and thousands of dollars of loans in the process. With all that in mind, how does that get us the dream job? Our career advisors and our mentors help us pave the way.

Once that student crosses that stage and gets their diploma they are no longer a student, they are a college graduate looking for a job. Students are looking for their career advisors prior to graduation to help them with their interview skills, where to look for jobs, and who to network with. Career services should also help those that are unsure what they would like to do post-graduation. They should also be conscious of the current job market. At the University of Birmingham in London students that receive unpaid internships receive compensation for their travel and accommodations. I think this is an excellent idea because some students are reluctant to take unpaid internships because they need money to get through school. For the success rates of students to increase the career services must be innovative to figure out ways to make their students successful.

As college students, we are all nervous about finding jobs upon graduation. Jobs are scarce and more people are deciding to get a higher education creating competition to increase. Knowing that other universities around the world are trying to help their students as well because they know it is a growing problem. If students are not able to get jobs it could lead to them not being able to pay their bills especially their student loans. In the end, career services has a job on their hands to help these students out so the problem of students not getting jobs does not get worse.
