Blog 6: Colleges Worry That Court Could Make Diversity Harder to Maintain

I have been at UNCG for three years now and I can say we are a very diverse community. Due to pass cases within the Supreme Court is the reason our school is the way it is. Many colleges base their admissions on race.  Currently in our supreme court it is up for discussions that race should not considered when admitting someone to their university. They have revisited this issue many times so why now are they reconsidering their previous decision?
Some schools are saying that if race can no longer be a factor then they will not be getting the same results they have been getting for years. The Obama administration has made the suggestion that for universities to increase their diversity should consider looking at the applicant’s socioeconomic and looking at what school they are coming from. We should be fortunate that we live in a nation where different races are allowed to go to school together; it may not be this way in other countries.
This is a social problem in many ways. Having diverse universities draws people to apply to that school, if diversity goes down then people will not be inclined to go to that school. Another way that is this is a social problem if people are not attending college then there will be no educated people to do jobs which leads to possible jobs being unfilled like doctors or entrepreneurs. Before the supreme court makes the decision about whether to allow college to consider race in admissions they should think about the consequences and how it possible impact the world.
