Authorities and the rest of public believe that the fatal capsizing of a yacht in Nova Scotia, Canada was the fault result of an attempt to bring in illegal immigrants into Canada. Human smuggling is a big business around the world and Canada is one of the most chosen destinations for refugees and immigrants to be dropped off. The United Nations believe that human smuggling is one of the most profitable criminal activities around the world. According to findings over a quarter of a million people were smuggled into Canada each year since 2006. Canada is currently trying to work on their legislative system by attempting to adjust legislation for new comers coming to the country. The country brought about a new bill to attempt to cut down on the smuggling. These people being smuggled often pay the smugglers to let them into the country so they can have a better life. As for the smugglers if they are caught they receive punishments such as 500,000 dollar fine or 10 years in prison at the maximum. The article states that there is a huge difference between human trafficking and human smuggling. Usually trafficking involves exploitation where smuggling does not. They are both considered prominent problems that affect the world. Human trafficking is on the rise in Canada and affects industries like sex trade industries, the service sector and child care. Canada is still trying to find better ways to crack down on this issue.
Canada is another country that has been hugely affected by not only human trafficking but human smuggling. What stuck out to me the most was the difference between human trafficking and human smuggling. I always grouped them together in the past as being the same. I believe looking at things from a sociological perspective it is important to break down the issue even further and I think this article did just that. I was surprised to see that human smuggling occurs as much as it does in Canada, especially in Nova Scotia. While I was reading the article I also thought people would do anything for money because those smugglers are taking a huge chance on their own freedom for bringing the immigrants and refugees into the country. This goes to show though that everything is a business and people will do anything for a profit. This article was very informative and I definitely learned some things from it.
