Blog 7: Cocaine seizures drop in Mexico as traffic moves

This article states that cocaine seizures have dropped in Mexico in recent years. According to a report from the International Narcotics Control Board, Mexicans sized only 10 tons of cocaine last year but 53 tons of cocaine in 2007. This is a huge drop.  A representative of the U.N.  Office on Drugs and Crime said that traffickers are diverting their cocaine operations elsewhere. Although the amount of cocaine seized in Mexico has dropped, other drugs trafficked like marijuana  and methamphetamine has not dropped. The President in Mexico has sent tens of thousands of federal police and troops to fight against the drug cartels. It seems that the pressure from the government and fighting among the cartels has increased the risks of trafficking the cocaine through Mexico.  Instead, it has moved through less difficult routes.
I believe drug trafficking is a serious international crime. Drug trafficking is not only a crime, but drugs lead other people to commit crimes.  It is unbelievable at how much some groups go through to traffic drugs into the United States and into other countries. In Mexico, drug trafficking has lead to a huge six year fight. It has created a dangerous place.  The pressure from the government and fighting among the cartels has dramatically decreased the amount of cocaine trafficked through Mexico. This goes to show that the government and people can make a difference in the drug trafficking that goes on internationally. If more countries would step up and put pressure on the different drug cartels, maybe drug trafficking could be reduced.
