Blog 8: Most girls in world's rural areas don't attend high school

According to the article” women make up two-thirds of the world’s population, yet 796 million illiterate people.” Many women are encouraged to become wives and mothers.  They are also being told to stay at home and take care of the house.  Many countries, 68, suggest the key factor in stopping poverty and   making sure children have a better future is educating women.  “Children of mothers with no education in the Latin American and Caribbean region are 3.1 times more likely to die than those with mothers who have secondary or tertiary education, and 1.6 more likely to die that those whose mothers have primary-level education."  In Pakistan, distances keep many girls from attending school.
I am saddened that even though the year is 2012, the world still faces inequalities in education.  This is a global issue because many women across the world have no education. Almost 800 million women are illiterate and studies suggest that if we educate women many issues that countries are facing such as dying and poverty will be eliminated, but leaders are not doing anything about this issue.  Women across the world are still viewed as second class citizen.  There are many parts of the world that women do not have a voice.  I believe many leaders, especially in the Middle East; do not want to educate women because they do not want women to feel powerful because to them this is not a woman’s place. Many women, especially in poverty countries are getting married and becoming mothers and are told that their role is taking care of the home.  Yet if women were educated they would be the answer to so many of the world’s problems.
