This article talks about how there is a food shortage in Niger, and the families are worried about their lives, and the lives of the children. The agencies say that if we act now, and try and get them food now instead of waiting for them to be under-nutritioned, and that will help save money. When a child is hungry it only takes $1 to feed them, and keep them healthy, but once they become malnutritioned it takes $80 to help them get healthy. Another big problem is that the families are taking their children out of the schools to work for food, and even sometimes just roam around in the hopes of finding food. Sometimes they work for days on end for hardly anything, and don't even get the proper amount of food. So far the aid agency has only gotten 30% of the help that they need, so we need to do something to help them get all they need to help these children. They say that last year 100,000 people died due to the drought, and we didn't pay attention to the warning signs.
I feel that we need to pay attention to the warning signs, and realize that we will be doing better, and saving more money if we go ahead and help them now. We need to see that the kids would still be in school if we would help the families feed them so they don't have to go out and work. They will be able to stay healthy and be children without having to grow up and worry about being older, and working everyday. Also, if we look at the money side it will be cheaper for us to help them now as well, and we can also save lives. I feel that no matter what we should help them because we don't need to loose more lives of families and children. We don't want a repeat of what happened last year. We need to show that they aren't alone, and we need to support them by helping the kids to stay alive, and keeping the families from falling into malnutrition.
