Blog #8: FOULDS: Kony 2012 movement has already made and Impact

This week I stepped away from the cybercrime theme of crime and took a different route. Over the past couple of weeks I have been seeing tons of advertisements and videos on the Kony 2012 movement. The global current event on crime I chose for this week was an article titled, “FOULDS: Kony 2012 Movement has already made an Impact.” In this article it discusses the purpose of this movement and the reason for all of this even going on in the first place. This movement is going on in order to capture Joseph Kony who has kidnapped countless children and made them into soldiers and sex slaves over the past decade. The article discusses many statements that have come from critics of this movement but it also discusses the positives of this movement. Foulds states the following in the article: “Other critics have argued Kony is a shadow of his former dangerous self, that he is no longer in Uganda and that there exists equally or more menacing international criminals who deserve to be brought to justice.” The Kony 2012 movement obviously has a lot of questions to still answer about Joseph Kony before he is going to be found and captured. The point of this movement is to make Kony famous and for everyone to know what this criminal is doing and this is how we believe that Kony will be found. April 20th of this year is going to be the main part of this movement.
The significance of this global current event on crime is very large because this Kony 2012 movement is getting individuals involved all around the world and not simply just in Uganda. There are many links, advertisements, and video on all social networking sites that are informing individuals on this movement of a man committing such horrid crimes and this is causing many individuals to take part in this movement by donating money or purchasing action kits to be in the movement on April 20th of this year. From a sociological perspective this is extremely important because the first thing that needed to be done was to inform society on the crimes of Kony so that individuals will take action to put an end to this crime and this is exactly what this movement is doing. At the end of the article, Foulds discusses that his daughter was so excited to tell him about what she had heard at school dealing with the Kony 2012 movement and he could tell that the videos and news about this movement were impacting young children and adults and getting them interested in current events going on around the world. This is great to know that children and adults are being impacted by something that is going on all the way in Uganda. It is important that the world comes together and informs everyone on Joseph Kony to make him famous of his horrid crimes so that he can be captured.
