Blog 9: Probe into shooting of U.S. Teenager Trayvon Martin
Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old boy who was gunned down on
his way home from the grocery store on February 26th by a man, George Zimmerman, who was in
captain of the neighborhood watch in a community in Florida. The article states
that Zimmerman shot Martin because he looked suspicious. The shooting will be investigated
by the court system in Florida as well as the United States Department of
Justice. This case has gotten global attention. There is a worldwide online
petition on change.org that has been set up for people to sign with the hopes
of the signatures being motivation that the court systems prosecute Zimmerman.
This is one of the biggest petitions in history being that more than 500,000
people have already signed it. The social networks helped express the
importance of the issue and helped get Trayvon’s parents story out to the world.
The new law in Florida is different so it causes a problem in furthering the
case. Under the new law George Zimmerman may not be able to be prosecuted.
Jonathan Peri of the justice department did state in the article that there
could be a number of different outcomes of the case once it is investigated.
I feel this type of crime happens all the time. Innocent
lives are taken all over the world because of appearance or association. This is not the first time and probably not that last that something like this has happened. When I
found out that the case got not only national attention but global attention I
was happy because people need to be aware of what happens in society. Sometimes
governments, police, and other officials try to hide the truth about certain
acts of violence. That seems to be the trend with most of the crime current
event articles that I have written thus far. Everyone wants to hide the truth
and the negative. It is best to get justice on this issue and fight for even
more global attention. With the world backing this family, it will make it that
much harder for the court system to allow this to go unnoticed. If there is no
justice made for this 17 year old young man, then most likely there will not be
any for the next.
