The reason Mexico’s education system is failing is because of the National Worker’s Union or the SNTE. The SNTE controls Mexico’s curriculum. Sixty classrooms are missing teachers because in some states the Union is selling teaching position to the highest bidder. Classes are not only missing teachers, but are being conducted outside with no drinking water. The OCDE, an advising group from Paris, says that only 0.7 percent of Mexican children are able to compete on math global level. Mexico is at the bottom when compete against other countries on the OCDE or PISA test. Ilan Semo , political historian, states "In Mexican public schools, they teach resignation and, above all, to be someone who depends on the state.” Private schools are on a rise in Mexico, yet on standardize test the still fall short.
This is a global issue because Mexico is not able to compete globally with other countries. Although schools in Mexico are free to all, most of the country is poor. Mexico doesn’t have a lot of resources like advance technology, books, or even water as privilege countries such as Japan, US, and China has. The fact that most classrooms are outside and the children have no drinking water is a major global problem. The social problem is that teachers are absent from the classrooms because their positions are not secure. The state of Mexico needs to require more of their teachers, but in order to do this they need to make sure that teacher’s positions are not given to the highest bidder.
