Blog 11:Faculty Gives Yale a Dose of Dissent Over Singapore

Yale University is opening a new college at National University of Singapore. But there is a lot of controversy going on between the professors of Yale that do not agree with this project. They are concerned that they are opening a school where the city is full of death penalty, homosexual relations are illegal, and unjust punishments.  Also, some faculty members feel that they did not have say so if the Yale was going to open this university at Singapore. Yale is not the first college to do that, New York University opened another school in Abu Dhabi with the same concept as Yale has. So why exactly is the faculty of Yale getting so bent out of shape when Yale is not the first university to do this? If anything they should be thrilled because more students that are possible not as privileged as U.S are able to get a college degree now, isn’t that what those professors signed up for is to help young adults? Another argument that the faculty is trying to make is that Singapore is not a good location for this school. But if you look as college towns some are not located in the best of places either. These professors are not looking at the broader picture; more students will be receiving a premier education as well as the professors will be able to do their research. So really this is a win-win situation. Yale is earning revenue from the Singapore location as well as learning helping the students in Singapore get a good education.
