Blog 12: Baby beaten because she was a girl
A father
has been arrested on allegations of beating his 3 month old baby because she
was born a girl. The baby, named Afreen,
was hospitalized with burn marks on her head and a dislocated neck, injuries
that police said were caused by her father named Farooq, a 22-year-old car
painter. He was arrested on Sunday and
is in custody facing charges of attempted murder. The baby died of cardiac arrest after
multiple convulsions Wednesday, but Farooq ended up confessing to the beatings
because he wanted a boy and not a girl. Farooq
had a wife she was 19 years old and the girl was the first child of the married
couple. The case highlights the
preference among many Indians for sons over daughters. There has already been a situation over the
gender preferences in the worlds second populated after china. In India it’s illegal to have an abortion
because of the gender but they are still rampant and unauthorized clinics have
been aiding these abortions.
I think it’s absolutely
terrible to hurt a baby just because of its gender. They can’t help what gender they are and also
they can’t even defend themselves. India
has always had the deep-rooted son preference but that is no way to murder a 3
month old baby. Child abuse is not the
answer for anything. I think it is a
gut-less crime and only a coward would do something like that. It goes on all over the world and I know
someone who has experienced it. It’s a terrible
thing for someone to go through, and there is always someone there to help if
anyone has to go through something like this.

I agree with you. I think this is terrible that people kill their babies because they turn out to be a different gender than what the couple had hoped. This happens a lot in India. I learned in another class that sometimes Fathers are ashamed when they do not produce a boy. Boys continue on patriarchy society and honor where as girls cannot do that because they get married and lose the family name. Even if this is a custom of the country, I do not think that justifies killing any baby. I agree with you it is a gut-less crime. But what do you do when people are raised to act this way and believe their actions are right.
